How to Repair a Dead Car Key

Sometimes extreme heat or cold can cause a car key to stop functioning properly. You should wait a while before you spend money to replace it.

It's a major pain when the keys to your car fail and they happen at the most uncomfortable times! There are a variety of ways to repair the broken car key that don't require a new one.

Dead Key Fob Battery

Modern key fobs let us open trunks, doors, and tailgates easily without the need to search for a physical car key. Certain key fobs come with a built in key that can be used to start our vehicles. However, these devices depend on a tiny battery that provides power to their remote functions. If the battery fails and the key fob dies, it will not be able to transmit the signal to activate the vehicle. There are a variety of ways you can fix the problem and get your car running again.

First, you must determine if your key fob is actually dead. If it seems to be, then you'll have to replace the battery. You can do this yourself by taking the key fob off its clip or using a small flat-head screwdriver to remove it. Be cautious not to put too much pressure on the fob or you may cause damage to the fob. It is also important to ensure that you're using the correct type of battery. Certain models may require a different battery. You can find out what kind of battery your vehicle needs in the owner's manual, or you can go to an Interstate All Battery Center and ask a specialist to assist you.

If the key fob isn't dead, you can revive it by moving it closer to your car. Since the majority of key fobs use RFID (radio-frequency identification) they can only operate at a limited distance and must be close enough for the ignition system to recognize the signal. You can unlock your car or even start it if you move few inches nearer.

Many car manufacturers include backup mechanisms that can be triggered when the battery of the key fob is dead. Ford, for example has a slot which is devoted to the key fob. If properly inserted,  vehicle key repairs  will activate the engine of the car. Refer to the owner's manual for instructions on finding this slot and how to insert the key fob. If you're not able to start the car by using this method, call roadside assistance.

Broken Key Ring

The key fob's internal chip is what communicates with your car's immobilizer system in order to start the engine. This chip can be damaged or there could be programming mistakes. If this occurs your key fob will not be able to send the correct identification code and your car won't begin. A damaged transponder may be caused by physical damage to the key shell or wear and wear and tear on the contact pads.

There are a lot of warning signs on your dashboard if a keyfob has trouble communicating with the immobilizer system of your vehicle. These include warnings about errors, flashing lights or the key is not locking the vehicle. If you are noticing these warnings contact your local locksmith immediately for a replacement key fob or repair.

It is very easy to damage the ring of your keys by applying too much pressure on it, particularly when carrying a lot of keys. This can cause the fob to crack in half. This is among the main causes of broken car keys. If this happens, you can try to use super glue to repair it by applying a small amount of the glue to both sides of the break and then gently pressing them together. It is important to use a gel-type glue that dries slowly to prevent drips or runniness.

If this method isn't working then you must contact a professional locksmith right away in order to avoid further damage to your vehicle. A locksmith who is qualified can replace or repair your fob swiftly and ensure that the ignition and door locks aren't damaged in the process.

If your key fob is damaged it can be frustrating and inconvenient. It is not a cause for anxiety or anger. Broken Key Loop

One of my MK5 keyfobs is broken off the little key loop on top of the loop where it joins the keyfob. It appears to be made of extremely soft plastic or metal. I've drilled a hole, and then wet-sanded the area to strengthen it, but I suspect the problem isn't helped by this.

I've also attempted to wrap the broken the ring using clear tape, but it didn't look to be any better. It's really a shame because I use the little rings to keep my keys in place on the tiny mini-splitring that holds the bigger split ring for the keyfobs that I have.

If the key fob's case itself is broken It's usually possible to remove the case and replace the battery (assuming the battery isn't already dead). Online kits are available, but they only provide a temporary solution. It is more efficient to get it fixed by a professional. You can also locate an updated case at an a locksmith or home improvement stores. They're not likely to cost as much as a new key fob.
